Nutritional Therapists of Ireland

The Nutritional Therapists of Ireland (NTOI) is the professional body representing qualified Nutritional Therapists throughout Ireland. It operates as an independent, non-profit organisation run by its members and overseen by a board of directors. One of the board’s key responsibilities is to promote and protect the professional recognition of Nutritional Therapists within the Irish healthcare system.

To become a registered member, practitioners must hold at least a UK Level 6 Diploma in Nutritional Therapy, usually achieved through a three-year programme. Training includes biochemistry, physiology, and pathology, along with a minimum of 200 hours of supervised clinical practice. This ensures members are fully qualified to work in private practice with individuals or groups.

All NTOI-registered Nutritional Therapists are insured, adhere to a strict Code of Professional Ethics and Practice, and are required to complete ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This commitment helps guarantee high professional standards and safe, effective, and ethical nutritional care for the public.

Nutritional Therapists and Other Nutrition Professionals

Nutritional Therapists and Dietitians are both highly trained professionals who specialise in the use of food and nutrition to support health, wellbeing, and the management of a wide range of health concerns. Their role involves providing tailored advice and guidance on dietary choices, helping individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle, address specific health challenges, or work towards defined health-related goals.

While there are similarities between the two professions, there are also important distinctions. Dietitians typically work within hospital and clinical settings, where they are trained to manage complex cases, including critical care and specialised medical nutrition. Nutritional Therapists, on the other hand, focus on a more holistic and personalised approach, working primarily in private practice and community-based settings. Their training equips them to support clients on a one-to-one or group basis, but not to deliver hospital-based or critical care nutrition management.
Both professions share a commitment to improving health through the power of nutrition, but the scope of practice and environments in which they work differ significantly.
